Codeine is an opioid analgesic (pain reliever) and is commonly prescribed for the treatment of mild to moderate pain and as a cough suppressant in combination medications. It is also sometimes used to treat diarrhea and is available both alone and in combination with other medications such as acetaminophen or aspirin.
